Traditional SEO vs GEO

SEO and GEO: Foundations and Measurement

Understand where search optimisation and AI visibility overlap, and measure the outcomes separately.

SEO, AEO and GEO share the job of making useful information discoverable and understandable. Google says existing SEO fundamentals apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no special AI files or schema required. Eligibility does not guarantee inclusion.

Questions for your team

  • Can customers find and understand the important pages?
  • Can intended crawlers access the public content?
  • Are business facts and relevant markup accurate?
  • Do completed AI responses mention the right business?
  • Do traffic and enquiry records support the business case?

The AnswerMetrix workflow

Review the proposed change, confirm its facts and check delivery support for your website. After authorising an eligible fix, inspect the delivery record and the separate live-page check. Use your CMS or developer for work the connection cannot deliver.

AnswerMetrix supports Perplexity, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and DeepSeek. It records brand mentions separately from returned citation URLs in completed responses across supported providers. Availability and coverage vary. Inspect available excerpts and sources with their dates, prompts and coverage. Some responses have no saved excerpt; a missing response is not a measured absence.

Assess value with your own evidence

Use an important page and a real business question for a small evaluation. Record setup effort, the usefulness of the proposed work and whether the result can be checked. A change in a sampled AI answer is not proof of more enquiries or sales.

Start from the findings you already have. Run a fresh scan when the site has changed or the evidence is too old for your decision, and check your plan allowances first. Saved reports remain available without starting another analysis.

Use shared foundations and separate outcomes

Google’s current guidance: https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features. Check crawl/index access, useful content, accurate structured data and internal discovery. Measure rankings, mentions, citations, visits and enquiries separately; a readiness score cannot stand in for those outcomes.

For Perplexity, distinguish indexing crawlers, user-requested fetching and training controls. Review robots and firewall behavior for the relevant agent: https://docs.perplexity.ai/docs/resources/perplexity-crawlers.

Measure the business question

Keep technical readiness, a delivered change, indexing, AI mentions, citations, visits and qualified enquiries separate. Use comparable dates and coverage, record setup/review costs and inspect real conversion records where available. A change in visibility is a reason to investigate, not causal proof of revenue.

No credit card required. Ongoing delivery needs an eligible plan and a supported connection.
