A meta description is a page summary that search systems may use for a result snippet. Write it for the person deciding whether the page meets their need. Search systems may choose different snippet text.
A useful writing sequence
- 1Name what the page actually offers.
- 2Include a relevant audience or service area where it helps.
- 3Add one verified distinguishing detail.
- 4Use a next step that exists on the page.
Keep examples factual
For an illustrative plumbing service, a useful description might be: “Plumbing repairs in Cape Town. Explore the services available and contact the team about your repair.” Add details such as emergency availability or a quoted price only when the page and business can support them.
Review before publishing
- Describe the specific page rather than repeating the same site-wide sentence.
- Use natural language without keyword stuffing.
- Treat character counts as editing aids; displayed length varies.
- Escape quotes correctly in HTML rather than claiming quotes cannot be used.
- Make the page fulfil the promise in its summary.

Review the proposed change, confirm its facts and check delivery support for your website. After authorising an eligible fix, inspect the delivery record and the separate live-page check. Use your CMS or developer for work the connection cannot deliver.
A better description does not guarantee more clicks or an AI citation. Review Search Console trends using the dates shown and avoid attributing movement to one edit without stronger evidence.
